Meeting with the tipper truck operators

Sand and stone winning within the Sakumo Ramsar site by some unscrupulous tipper truck operators goes on with impunity. The result is serious soil erosion and loss of farm lands and habitats for birds.  Their activities have lead to the arrest of several people, some were sent to court while few others were made to sign undertaken to refrain from sand winning activity within the Site. In the light above, Friends of Ramsar Sites (FORS) in collaboration with the Wildlife Division organized a meeting to create awareness among the tipper truck operators about the value and the importance of the Sakumo Ramsar Site.  Speaking on the degradation and the impact caused by their activities  Mr. C. C. Amankwah of Wildlife Division cautioned the sand winners and indicated that their action contravenes the  Wetland  Management (Ramsar Site) Regulations (L I 1659, 1999)  adding that anybody who goes contrary to the law will be arrested and prosecuted
